However there were many acts and laws past to limit the influx of immigrants, do to prejudice, such as the Chinese Exclusion Act. Later on into the 20th century there would be laws repealing the older immigration laws and acts making it possible for many more foreigners to immigrate to the United States. Even with the new acts and laws that banned the older ones, no one can just walk right in and become a citizen. One must go through several examinations and tests before he or she can earn their citizenship. One man who has experienced immigrating into the United States is Charles B. Wang, an immigrant from China that has made himself a multibillion-dollar fortune in the computer industry. The Chinese Americans who originally faced extreme racism on the west cost are spread across the nation today and most have kept their culture. Many immigration laws and acts were placed against foreigners to control the influx of immigrants arriving on the American shores. The first of these was the Chinese Exclusion Act of May 6, 1882. Robotic Forklift Background Our final project is a semi-automatic Robotic Forklift, which will receive directions of where to go from a remote control and be autonomous from then on. The robotic forklift system is designed for use by companies dealing with medium to large sized inventories, including warehouses and storage facilities. Companies with large inventories in warehouses need to be able to quickly and easily transport these goods within the warehouse without concerning human operators with the monotonous task of operating forklifts. Storage companies have a similar need; they must take in and store large inventories while also being able to quickly and easily access these items on demand. The use of human operators can be costly and wasteful. By eliminating human operators companies are able to lower labor costs and increase efficiency. Human factory employees need to be paid and given benefits like health insurance and paid vacation time. Since robots don’t need breaks and vacations! and are not paid, they are able to operate with more speed than humans in the long run and at lower costs. My essay, â€Å"The Long Road to Opportunity,† is designed to convey details about my childhood in Mexico to the reader. By using real anecdotes from my past, I attempt to show the reader my hunger for knowledge and the obstacles I had to overcome to achieve my goals.  I believe the strongest points in the essay are my thesis, which sets the reader up for the general theme of the essay to follow, and my examples of my father’s deeply held beliefs.Citing examples of specific things he said or did illustrates why it was difficult for me to act against his wishes. I also believe my essay has a good, natural flow. It begins with a broad look at the main idea, and then works through the story in chronological order, culminating in the present. I feel that the information on Mexican culture also works well.  One weakness of the essay would be that it is difficult to tell a detailed story in such a short space. Ideas and stories must be condensed in order to cover all of t he main points I wish to address. With more space, I could develop each anecdote more completely, and do a better job of showing rather than telling.â€Å"The Long Road to Opportunity†When I was five years old I knew I would one day go to school and become an engineer. The road to where I am today has been long and difficult. I was born and raised in a small rural town where the most important activity in life was the harvest of the fields. Agriculture played an important and central role in everyone’s lives; everything else was seen as secondary and a waste of time. An interest in going to school was seen as an excuse to avoid responsibilities on the family farm. My father held these beliefs sacred, and as such proved to be a formidable opponent in my quest for education.I grew up the youngest of my eight siblings in a town called Dolores Hidalgo in Guanajuato, Mexico. My father farmed over 600 acres of land, divided into two parts; one part was used to raise cattle a nd the other part to grow corn and beans. My father believed that after God and family, the most important thing was the land. He believed a person’s character was manifested in his harvest. If one loved and respected nature, She would return that love and respect with an excellent harvest.Growing up on the farm, I enjoyed working in the fields and tending to the cattle. However, my first love was school. My father didn’t understand the passion I had for learning. When I was 4 years old, my father sent me to school with my sister Maria, who was six years old and scheduled to start first grade. My dad did not want my sister to walk to school by herself. When I got there, the teacher, Mr. Mendez, allowed me to sit in the classroom alongside my sister. After four weeks of classes, Mr. Mendez asked my father to visit the school. I was so scared Mr. Mendez was going to tell my dad that I could not go to school with Maria. When my father arrived at the school, Mr. Mendez adv ised him that I was the best student in his class and that he was going to speak to the principal about formally accepting me into school.My dad, who appeared to be in shock, was not happy with the news. He told the teacher the only reason I was sent to school was to escort my sister. He further stated that school would take away from my chores around the farm. I begged my dad to allow me to go. Furthermore, I promised to get up early and tend to the cattle before school and to continue with the farm work upon returning home in the afternoon. To my surprise, my father finally gave in. I was the happiest boy on earth – I would have access to more books. However, it never got easier. Perambulating through many different types of societies, he got to experience different ways of life as well as how differently people acted all around the country. Some were more laid back than others, im sure some were more religious than others. Experiencing these different types of social norms provided him with an idea of how different societies act in different parts of the world. Although Alex left his family and old life behind he created a new life by making new friends, potential family and basically a whole new life. On the way to Alaska a man who he met while hitchhiking Ronald Franz, was probably the closest person to him during this adventure. Ronald Franz wanted to adopt Chris as his grandson, which pretty much sums up how close they got. Ronald Franz stated so i asked Alex if i could adopt him, if he would be my grandson (Krakauer 55). Ronald seemed to be the most helpful person to Chris but he didnt want to accept any help from anyone no matter how close or helpful they seemed to be. Perhaps many people did think he was an insane man looking for a death wish or was malevolent, and he knew he wasnt going to make it out alive. Many people said that he was an insane man because he dropped everything he had going for him and left it all behind. In the TedTalk his sister talked about how Chris graduated college with honors. Many people would say, why would he leave that behind when he couldve used that to become something big like a doctor or even a lawyer. A lot of people would ask why he left his family behind he grew up in a great loving home. But little did they know he was actually emotionally and physically abused growing up, his father showed no clemency. His sister also said that they grew up in a home of, domestic violence, lies, and manipulation, they grew up going to sunday school that their parents taught, then being taught at home that their father was god. Growing up in this kind of family they knew they had to protect each other so Chris was her protector, she grew up knowing he would protect her if anything happened. But when Chris left to Alaska that all changed because throughout his journey they began to lose contact with each other. Those who knew this was going on believed that he was depressed and this might be a reason he left everything behind but no one noticed anything was wrong. He never showed symptoms such as, Feelings of sadness, tearfulness, emptiness or hopelessness (Mayo Clinic Staff). They said he seemed happy and that nothing was wrong but often times people miss the symptoms of being depressed. For example people experience, Unexplained physical problems, such as back pain or headaches (Mayo Clinic Staff), which he may have felt but never complained about it because he thought he was sore or dehydrated. He also couldve been experiencing Sleep disturbances, including insomnia (mayo clinic staff) which people arent going to notice. In the end of his journey to Alaska he did not survive long enough to make it home, which is one of the reasons people thought he was looking for a death wish or was just idiotic in general for making the decision to go to Alaska. Many people aid that, McCandless ended up dead with the story of his dumbassedness splashed across the media (Krakauer 71). After his death and his body was discovered, this made to be one of the top stories on the news that people were talking about. Though Chris McCandless did not survive and had no repertoire in this adventure, he did discover what truly made him happy before his death. Moments before his death he recorded one of his last journal entry which McCandless stated, HAPPINESS ONLY REAL WHEN SHARED (Krakauer 189). McCandless discovered that he really couldnt be happy unless he had someone to share his happiness with. McCandless also wanted it to be known his life was good and well spent. He wrote in his journal, I HAVE HAD A HAPPY LIFE AND THANK THE LORD. GOODBYE AND MAY GOD BLESS ALL! (Krakauer 199). Though many people thought he was insane and didnt know what he was doing or knew what he wanted to do, he lived a good, happy life as he said in his journal entry in his last goodbye to everyone and anyone who was there for him or heard about him. McCandless found what made him happy and he found his true peace in the end. McCandless survived 112 days after hed walked into the wild (Krakauer 199), which may not seem like a long time but that is almost half a year. He survived a half a year with minimal supplies, and no contact with anyone whatsoever. In his last moments alive he was smiling in a picture that he took of himself and there is no mistaking the look in his eyes: Chris McCandless was at peace, serene as a monk gone to God (Krakauer 199). Chris McCandless was finally at ease, Chris McCandless was full of gratitude and pride. Chris McCandless discoverer his happiness and died taking that happiness with him. Chris had his story, and now its being told letting people know that HAPPINESS ONLY REAL WHEN SHARED (Krakauer 189). Chris was only doing what felt right for himself to do, in order to find himself and set himself free from social norms and live his life to the fullest it could be, so he could find his own happiness and peace. There was no crazy, no depression, no deathwish, just a man discovering his true happiness.
